Remark by President Justin Yu (CCBA)

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen:

Today the Chinatown community welcome Honorable Congress member Nydia M. Velazquez, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, State Senator Brian Kavanagh, Senator John Liu, State Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou, Council Member Mark Levine, Council member Antonio Revnoso, Ms. Jenny Low from Speaker Corey Johnson’s office, President Raymond Tsang from Hoy Sun Ning Yung Benevolent Association, Mr. Jun Zhang representative from Lin Sing Association, President Teddy Mui from Tai Look Merchants Association and Mr. Winston Chiu founder of Rethink Food NYC to visit and support Chinatown.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, 99% of the Chinatown stores and businesses was closed.  Many Chinese Americans have been unemployed and facing financial difficulties.  Although the City has started to re-open, many businesses are still remaining closed and some of them have decided to closepermanently.  Many families are still suffering from income and food.

Although Chinatown’s restaurants are reopening, many of them are still suffering from the shelter in place order and the prohibition of indoor dining due to social distancing.   Unlike other community, the sidewalks in Chinatown are relatively narrow for outdoor dining.  Chinatown is proposing a plan to expand the Open Streets program in our community to promote outdoor dining, like Little Italy. We are recommending the closure of some streets in Chinatown, ideally from 5pm Fridays to 10pm Sunday evenings, in order help the recovery of our small businesses and bring back visitors and jobs to Chinatown.

We are very exciting to announce that last week DOT has approved the closure of Bayard Street, from Mott to Mulberry, and two more streets on Pell and Doyers, to expand outdoor dining. CCBA will work hard to help more business in Chinatown area to bring back customers. And we hope all of you will support our plan.

Chinatown is now reopened.  We welcome everyone to visit us to enjoy delicious food, excellent professional services and shopping in our stores and businesses.  You will enjoy a great time here in New York City Chinatown. Thank you
