HOME FOR CHINESE FAMILY Local Nonprofit Provides Housing to International Patients Boston, MA –Year2008 Young man came from China, was working as a postdoctoral fellow at Medical School when he suffered a serious immune complication. After their son lost his ability to walk and speak, parents had to travel from their native China to Boston in order to be with their son during his illness. It was of vital importance that his parents stay with him in order to assist him in his recovery. Fortunately, a local nonprofit was able to help make this possible. Since 1983, Hospitality Homes has provided free host housing for more than 12,000 families traveling to Boston for medical care. Over one hundred hosts in Boston open their hearts and homes to patients and their families. Hospitality Homes is the only housing service available in Boston that helps regardless of income, age, nationality, diagnosis, or treatment facility.
Hospitality Homes has provided housing to international patients from seventy countries around the world, ranging from Algeria to China, from New Zealand to Vietnam. Last year, out of 5,312 guest nights provided, 33% were for international stays. This year, they are projecting 36% of guest nights will be international. However, the total number of international guest nights has jumped from 1,736 to 2,442, a 41% increase over last year. The high numbers are due both to an increasing awareness of Hospitality Homes and the extended stays associated with specialized medical treatment.
These lengthy stays can take a toll on those spending a difficult time in their lives in a foreign country with no support network. Hospitality Homes provides a home away from home, complete with the support of a caring host and staff, in order to ease the financial and emotional burden of these families.
